So what do you do when you don’t want to pay $100 bucks for a bottom bracket? you ghetto-phy an old one to make due.

Start with a Sugino bb

mill some stuff, tap some holes, get some duct tape…. presto

however, I might kill myself on this thing…

Yup, thats me and my new bike! A very proud man!

p1050449.jpg

My only thoughts right now are that I still don’t think its strong enough. For the next on I’m going to try welding tabs to the headtube and bottom bracket shell and fit them the same way I fit the drop outs. But who cares, its fun building them, and just as fun breaking them.

Finishing the bike

Once again I am almost ready to ride again! But, here are some steps I have taken differently. 1st I have lathed out dowels and split them so that I could accept the drop outs a bit more cleanly.

p1050416.jpg

And then I started wrapping the joints with sisal, please keep in mind the this is a learning process and if it looks like i don’t know what I’m doing, its because i don’t.

p1050418.jpg

UGLY. FLAT OUT

p1050419.jpg

MAYBE BETTER…..

p1050421.jpg

I CAN LIVE WITH THIS.

Any way in between this work and riding the old I got the chance to document the previous remains of the last iteration.

p1050425.jpg

Its always good to be humbled! so laugh it up, I sure did. the problem I found really is something that I could have already figure out. lugging bamboo is a bad idea, especially if your plan is to sleeve it over an old rusty schwinn.  also, sand those joints! uftda.

p1050426.jpg

So the bamboo didn’t fail. however, my craft did, and the wood slipped right out of the joint. Also you might like to know that some people complained about the strength or flexibility of the rear triangle. Well it took two people standing on the dropouts 400 pounds jumping up and down, to finally break the damn thing.  any way moving on here are some finished joints!

p1050431.jpg

GOOD….

p1050432.jpg

BETTER!

p1050433.jpg

BEFORE AND AFTER.

p1050435.jpg

FIN.

Well that’s all for right now, My next project is hopefully going to be a mountain bike, gotta chat with some people. please tear it apart, i need to make things better.

Lessons learned and other stuff.

Well,

I had an interesting experience last night around 10:30 outside a local biker bar, the “cowpony” while riding my first itteration of bamboo bike. The head tube started to rotate out of axis with the seat tube and before I knew it the bike was in 2 pieces on the road.  Problem: did not sand through outer layer of bamboo, and did not get a good connection. It was actually pretty awsome, I’ll post pictures soon. Anyway who really cares because I have a new child that will be ready soon.

new-bike-copy.jpg

Note:

the bamboo is not GREEN

the bamboo is SANDED

the bamboo is properly COPED

I’m fairly pleased with the way this is going, I found that by also baking the bamboo on its side while it is still green gives it an “aerotube” shape

aerotube.jpg

So, it actually meets the head tube more properly. However, whomever tries this, not that cutting bamboo on the band saw is not only dangerous because of silica and sistic fibrosis, but it is also evil because when it is harded it explodes when it get bound in the blade. needless to say I splinter dang near sliced my thumb off.

well in class gotta run post more later!
